Fibromyalgia/Chronic Pain

Fibromyalgia is a medical condition marked by widespread pain and tenderness when being touched. Often, it is associated with anxiety, depression, sleep problems, memory problems, and fatigue. Its causes are relatively unknown, although it’s been suggested that trauma, infection, psychological, and genetic factors have something to do with the disease. According to researchers, the pain is felt due to the changes in the brain, which makes a patient severely sensitive than most people.

Although men can also be affected with this disease, it is more common among women between the ages 30 and 50. There are also studies indicating that fibromyalgia is common among people that have recently undergone a divorce, belonging in a lower household income, lower educational level, and those with disabilities.

Fibromyalgia has several symptoms, but among the common ones include depression, mental fog, fatigue, and widespread pain.

If you suspect that you or a loved one has fibromylgia, you should be aware that there are physiatrists that can prescribe you with treatment options to eliminate and reduce pain and minimize or totally prevent its recurrence.

Fibromyalgia is such a frustrating disease and not one person must suffer from it. While there are medications, it is important to know that they aren’t the only solution.

What Dr. Herman does is combine holistic alternative therapies with traditional medical care in order to find relief to widespread pain caused by fibromyalgia. As a physiatrist, he designs custom modalities of treatment for each pain. Each treatment plan is based on a patient’s current health and medical history, as well as the knowledge of how a certain injury or disease was acquired.

Dr. Herman often uses a combination of the following treatments:

  • Massage therapy
  • Topical treatments and prescription medications
  • Active physical therapy (e.g. exercise, stretching)
  • Passive physical therapy (e.g. heat/ice, TENS units)
  • Alternative and holistic treatments such as exercise, meditation, visualization, and acupuncture
  • Dietary changes
  • Interventional medicine to reduce inflammation

People with fibromyalgia and chronic pain need no longer rely on prescription pain medication, which many people find themselves addicted to. There are medical doctors who can perform alternative treatments in order for you to finally be free of pain.
